Expert: Angela - 7/15/2009
QuestionHi, i've done a couple of cross stitch projects but mostly the ones that u frame and hang in your wall. I've been thinking of doing a stitch throw pillow case but i don't know how, specially with the finishing. I hope u could help me so i could start a different project other than framed cross stitch. Thank you so much for your help
AnswerHello, Nikki
You can stitch any design on any fabric. With regards to the throw pillow case, you'll need to use waste canvas, which can be purchased at Hobby Lobby, or Michaels, or even
http://www.123stitch.com and type in "waste canvas".
If you're going to be stitching a design on towards the opening of the case, cut a piece of waste canvas longer than the actual design size itself. Pin it in place, and then baste it close to the edges on all 4 sides.
Next, find the center of the canvas by counting, mark it with a pin, and then find the center of the design that you wish to use. While stitching your design, try not to split the actual threads as you're inserting the needle into the holes. This won't allow the canvas threads to come out easily, and may ruin your design while you're trying to remove the threads.
After stitching, get a damp cloth, and dampen the canvas. Make sure to use cold water, and not hot or warm because the embroidery threads will bleed otherwise. Taking a pair of tweezers, gently pull the canvas threads out one by one. You'll need to hold down the canvas a bit as you're removing the threads.
Once you have all the threads removed, simply toss them into the garbage. You can wash your case as follows:
1. In a clean sink, fill it about 1/3 to ½ of the way with cool water; add a small amount of dishwashing liquid.
2. Place project into the water, and gently swish it around to loosen any soiling. Allow to sit for about 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, gently swish around again. If soiling remains, use a clean, brand new tooth brush and gently scrub the soiled areas clean.
3. Rinse the project under cool water until water runs clear.
4. Place project onto a clean, dry towel, and roll project into the towel. Gently squeeze project to remove any excess water.
5. With an iron preset to 3 (cotton), with steam, place project onto ironing board, and iron on the wrong side to remove the wrinkles.
6. Either lay flat, or hang to dry.
If you're thinking of creating an actual pillow with polyfill, etc., I'm sorry as my skill level on the sewing part is non-existent at this time.
I hope that this helps you. Good luck, and happy stitching! :)
Sincerely,
Angela :)
