Question
I need help.  I have just completed a 12 x 12 counted cross stich of a "Westie" (dog)   I would like to make this into a pillow.   The finished project was done on rug canvas using a heavy yarn #4.  How do I attach a fabric back to the canvas.  Is this done by hand sewing or machine???   This is confusing so hope you understand.  Kind regards, Maureen

Answer
Hello, Maureen

You can attach the fabric backing using either of the methods.  1. Sewing it by hand; 2. Machine sewing; or 3. Using fabric glue.  The 3rd option is a fabric glue, and it's ok to wash it in cold water and it won't harm the glue.  It's called "Ok To Wash It", and I think you can find it in either Hobby Lobby or Michaels.  If you choose #3, and you plan on making the backing a decorative part of the pillow, you will need to fold the edges over about 1/4" and machine sew them in place.  Then, you can use the fabric glue to adhere the fabric to the canvas.  The glue will also prevent any of the stitches from coming out if the pillow got snagged in any way.

I hope that helps.  Good luck! :)

Sincerely,

Angela :)

I have 22+ years of cross stitching experience, which includes stitching on Aida, evenweave linen, vinyl canvas, and have stitched a design on a cotton t-shirt using waste canvas. I have also worked with beads and blending filament in quite a few projects. I have made many projects which include cross stitched mugs, a keychain, pictures, magnets, and the cotton t-shirt. I can answer questions pertaining to preparing and cleaning fabric, preparing clothing for stitching, how many threads to be used on which Aida cloth, and will try to help you to the best of my ability with other questions you may have. I am prompt in my responses and usually answer within 24 hours from when you ask your question. I look forward to helping you. :)
