Question
I would like to know how to convert a pattern from 18 count to 28 count linen.  If I normally would go over 2 holes in 18 count would I increase to 3 or 4 holes to convert up to the higher count?

Answer
Diane,

First let me apologize for it taking me so long to get back to you. I have been at the hospital all week with my father who needs a bypass, but is not healthy enough for one. I have not been anywhere near a computer for several days. Again, I am sorry.

I will be happy to answer your questions. First, if you are working over 2, you will continue. I have worked over 4, but only if the pattern called for it. So you will still just work over 2.

Now to convert fabric sizes is pretty easy. You simply divide the stitch count by the fabric count. The only thing you have to remember is that when you stitch over 2 you are actually dividing your fabric count in half. For example, if you work a piece on 14 count Aida over one, you will get 14 stitches per inch. If you work a piece on 28 count over 2, you still get 14 stitches per inch.

So if your stitch count is 200 x 300 on 18 count over 2, your fabric size would be:

200/9=22.2 and I add 4 to 6 inches for finishing so 26 inches

300/9=33.3 + 4 = 37.

so 26 x 37 inches

the same stitch count on 28 count would be:
200/14 = 14.3 + 4 = 17 and

300/14 = 21.4 + 4 = 25

so 17 x 25 inches

I hope this is helpful and explains it well.

Again, I am sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Good luck on your piece!

Happy Stitching!
Kris
