Question
Hi Angela ~  I haven't cross stitched in years, but would like to pick it up again in the form of bread cloths, however the fabric "by the yard" is pretty stiff.  Will washing it afterwards soften the fabric? i was also wondering if adding vinegar to the water would help.  Thanks in advance for your guidance!

Answer
Hello, Sue :)

Congratulations on getting back into cross stitching. :)  It's still a very enjoyable hobby no matter when you return to it. :)

You CAN wash the fabric before stitching on it, however, it'll soften as you work with it.  I'm not sure about adding vinegar to the water to soften the fabric, though.  I've never heard of doing that before.  They do make bread cloths readily available for stitching.  Charles Craft is one company that makes them, and they can be found here:

Also, you may be able find them at Hobby Lobby, or Michaels.  I think Wal-Mart is doing away with their cross stitching section now, which is a shame.

I hope that helps.  Good luck, and happy stitching! :)

Sincerely,

Angela :)

I have 22+ years of cross stitching experience, which includes stitching on Aida, evenweave linen, vinyl canvas, and have stitched a design on a cotton t-shirt using waste canvas. I have also worked with beads and blending filament in quite a few projects. I have made many projects which include cross stitched mugs, a keychain, pictures, magnets, and the cotton t-shirt. I can answer questions pertaining to preparing and cleaning fabric, preparing clothing for stitching, how many threads to be used on which Aida cloth, and will try to help you to the best of my ability with other questions you may have. I am prompt in my responses and usually answer within 24 hours from when you ask your question. I look forward to helping you. :)
