Cross Stitch/Backing

Question
I have been cross stitching for a few years now but mostly 5x7 or 8x10 to be framed projects.  This year I have decided to stitch some dish towels for both my mother (soon to be a grama for the first time) and my grandmother.  I like the way that they have all turned out but the practicality of being able to use them bothers me.  I don't think that the stitching will stay in with repeated use/washing.  Do you have any tips or suggestions for backing so that they can be useful and nice to look at?

Thanks so much,
Jill

Answer
Hello, Jill :)

You can always glue a piece of Aida cloth the same size as the stitched area to keep the stitching intact.  I would recommend a fabric glue to adhere the fabric to the towel.  You can find a washable fabric glue at either Michaels or Hobby Lobby.

To wash these, I would highly recommend either hand washing in cool water, or machine wash, very gentle cycle, cool water.  To wash them in warm could possible make the colors run.  Use a gentle detergent when washing, as well.  I've used dishwashing liquid on my products.  Roll into a towel to remove any excess water, and then iron on wrong side using steam and iron set at 3 for cotton, and then either lay flat or hang to dry.

I hope that helps.  Good luck, and happy stitching! :)

Sincerely,
Angela :)

I have 22+ years of cross stitching experience, which includes stitching on Aida, evenweave linen, vinyl canvas, and have stitched a design on a cotton t-shirt using waste canvas. I have also worked with beads and blending filament in quite a few projects. I have made many projects which include cross stitched mugs, a keychain, pictures, magnets, and the cotton t-shirt. I can answer questions pertaining to preparing and cleaning fabric, preparing clothing for stitching, how many threads to be used on which Aida cloth, and will try to help you to the best of my ability with other questions you may have. I am prompt in my responses and usually answer within 24 hours from when you ask your question. I look forward to helping you. :)
