Cross Stitch/Calculating how much floss

Question
Hi Angela - I have done Cross Stitch kits in the past but now have bought a couple of patterns to work on.  The patterns have the color chart as to which colors are used in the pattern but does not indicate how much of each color is needed.  Is there a way to calculate this?  or does one just buy a bunch of floss and hope for the best?  Thank you for any help that you can give.  Lyn

Answer
Hello, Lyn :)

Depending upon the type of fabric that you will be stitching on (ie. 14 count), you can use 2 strands of floss for each color.  Typically, a skein of floss will last you the entire project, unless there's a number in brackets which will indicate to you how many skeins you will need to complete that project.  You can also use 3 strands of floss to cover more area of the fabric so that the fabric doesn't show through your finished piece.  Just remember, though, that if you choose to do that, you will need another skein to finish the project.

14 count Aida = either use 2 strands or 3 (discretion is up to you)

18 count Aida = 2 strands (you CAN use only 1 strand of floss for this type of fabric, too)

22 count evenweave (Hardanger) = 2 strands of floss over 2 threads of the fabric)

And so on.

I hope this helps. :)  Good luck, and happy stitching! :)

Sincerely,
Angela :)

I have 22+ years of cross stitching experience, which includes stitching on Aida, evenweave linen, vinyl canvas, and have stitched a design on a cotton t-shirt using waste canvas. I have also worked with beads and blending filament in quite a few projects. I have made many projects which include cross stitched mugs, a keychain, pictures, magnets, and the cotton t-shirt. I can answer questions pertaining to preparing and cleaning fabric, preparing clothing for stitching, how many threads to be used on which Aida cloth, and will try to help you to the best of my ability with other questions you may have. I am prompt in my responses and usually answer within 24 hours from when you ask your question. I look forward to helping you. :)
