Cross Stitch/Changing fabrics
Expert: Angela - 9/21/2006
QuestionI have a cross stitch pattern that calls for 32ct belfast linen (finished it is 101w x 97h)...because of it being so tiny I would like to try and do it on 28 even weave linen instead. I have read the instructions a number of times on how to convert them, but I still can't figure it out.
Also, what does it mean when it says it was stitched over two fabric threads???
Thank you so much for your help!!
Blessings to you,
~Desiree
AnswerHello, Desiree :)
You CAN stitch any project onto any size of fabric. Be sure, however, to add an additional 12 inches (6 inches on all sides) to be able to complete the project, and have a little extra for framing. For example, say the project that you've stated is 10" x 9". You'll need to add 12 to the 10 to make 22, and 12 to the 9 to make 21. Be sure to center your project as you would normally.
To stitch over 2 threads of evenweave fabric is very simple, once you learn how. To do so, just find your center as you normally would, and insert a needle not through the first hole, but the second hole instead. Here's a diagram of what it should look like when you've completed a stitch:

Note: What I'm trying to show you is directly beneath the first pattern grid. You don't want your stitches to look like the diagram below the question, "How Do I Work Cross Stitches Over One Fabric Thread?".
Here's another diagram of stitching over 2 fabric threads:

Just scroll down to "Cross-Stitch: Background", and you'll see another diagram of working a stitch over 2 fabric threads.
It'll be a bit time consuming at first, and the stitches will be a bit small, but that's normal. :) I hope this helps. :)
Good luck, and happy stitching! :)

Angela
