Cross Stitch/Changing size of Aida cloth

Question
I bought a counted cross stitch kit but found the Aida cloth is too hard to work with because of the small holes, I have a hard time seeing them. What I want to do is use a different Aida cloth with larger holes so it is easier to work with & see.
The Ada cloth in the kit is navy 18 count, very small squares. I know I will need to buy more thread which is not a problem but what size Aida cloth would be easier to work with (larger squares per inch) and what size cloth would be needed to give me the size needed to make the completed picture.
The frame size given is 16x20 so I know that will increase by quite a bit which is also not a problem. Its the size of Aida cloth I would need that I am puzzled with.
Thank you for any help you can give me.

Answer
Hi Sue :)

Congratulations on purchasing a kit.  I love those, myself! :)

You can use either 14 or 11 count Aida in any color other than the navy, if you wish.  You don't have to stay with the exact color of fabric that the pattern is stitched on.  With corss stitching, only your imagination is your limit. :)

The frame size isn't the actual picture size.  Take the size of the picture, and add an additional 6" margin all around.  For instance, if your pattern size is 4.5" x 8.2", then you add another 6" to those numbers making it 10.5"x14.2".  Adding the extra 6" all around will give you extra to work with in case you need it.  You can always trim the excess off later, or you can fold it behind the mounting board when it's time to frame it. :)

I hope that helps. :)  Good luck, and happy stitching! :)
