Cross Stitch/Cleaning a Cross Stitch partially worked

Question
I have been given a partially completed Cross Stitch project of a beautiful Angel done in reds and greens. The problem is that the giver stored this project in a brown paper bag. I believe the brownish stains that are spotty all over the large piece of Aida fabric are from acid burn from the paper bag. Is there anything I can use safely to remove these stains and finish the project?

Answer
Hello, Jo Ann :)

To clean your stitchery, you would need to do the following:

1.  In a clean sink, fill it about 1/3 full of tepid (barely warm) water.  Hot water will make the colors run.  Add a tiny bit of either Woolite, or dishwashing liquid to the water as it's running, creating suds.

2.  Place the stitchery into the water, and allow to soak for about 5 minutes.  Gently swish it around to loosen the soiling.

3.  After 5 minutes, if you still see soiling, either use a brand new toothbrush (never used) and gently scrub the soiled areas, or gently rub between thumb and forefinger to remove any soiling.

4.  Rinse under cold water, and place onto a towel.  Roll into towel to remove excess water.

5.  Lay flat, wrong side up, onto an ironing board, and with an iron preset at 3, with steam, iron any wrinkles out.  Lay flat, or hang to dry.

This is for light soiling.  Unfortunately, if the soiling is as you've stated above, I don't think there will be anything to remove it.  All you can do is try and see what happens.  I wish you luck on this.

Happy stitching! :)

Sincerely,

Angela

I have 22+ years of cross stitching experience, which includes stitching on Aida, evenweave linen, vinyl canvas, and have stitched a design on a cotton t-shirt using waste canvas. I have also worked with beads and blending filament in quite a few projects. I have made many projects which include cross stitched mugs, a keychain, pictures, magnets, and the cotton t-shirt. I can answer questions pertaining to preparing and cleaning fabric, preparing clothing for stitching, how many threads to be used on which Aida cloth, and will try to help you to the best of my ability with other questions you may have. I am prompt in my responses and usually answer within 24 hours from when you ask your question. I look forward to helping you. :)
