Question
Hello. I am trying to learn how to design my own cross stitch pattern! It would be a simple pattern - I would like a "God Bless Our Home" pattern as a wedding gift, but I have not been able to find a pattern anywhere, so I would like to make one. I cannot figure out how to designate stitches though.....How do I grid the picture out?  Thank you!  Jenni

Answer
Hello Jenni,

There is actually grid paper made for creating your own cross stitch designs. If your local craft store doesn't carry any, then just use regular graphing paper. Each small square on the paper represents a stitch.

Sometimes it is easy to just draw out your design on a piece of regular paper. Then you can place your graph paper over the design and trace it.

Keep in mind the size fabric that you will be using for the pattern. Since it is your own design you can work the pattern on any fabric you choose.

Also, identify the center of your work on the graph paper. This will help you greatly when it is time to start actually stitching.

I hope this helps.

Experience

Needlecrafts have been a part of my life for years. I sew, cross stitch, knit, crochet and bobbin lace, just to name a few. Cross stitch was one of the firsat crafts that I learned as a child and has stayed with me as a wonderful and peaceful artistic way to express myself.
