Cross Stitch/Cross Stitching a Pillow Case

Question
I have a wonderful book of small cross stitch patterns which I'd love to embroider onto a pillow case edge. I have no idea how to do this, or if this can be done.  Is there anyway to transfer the pattern onto the case as there is obviously no aida cloth on it. What can you tell me about this crazy idea of mine.  Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello, Jane :)

First of all, it's NOT a crazy idea. :)  It's a lovely idea, and it CAN be done. :)

You'll need to purchase some waste canvas in order to achieve this, though.  You can buy the waste canvas at either Hobby Lobby, Michaels, or if Wal-Mart carries it in their craft section.  In order to do this, you'll need to follow these simple steps.

1.  Cut a piece of waste canvas larger than the design size.  Make sure that it's centered on the border of the case, and pin it in place.  Next, you will need to baste it place so that it doesn't move while stitching.

2.  After you have basted it in place, remove the pins.  Find the center of the canvas, and the center of your pattern (of course), and begin stitching.  When you're stitching, be sure to NOT get the needle into the threads of the canvas itself, as it will be difficult to remove them afterwards.

3.  Once you have finished stitching, get a clean cloth and dampen it.  Press the cloth onto the design and the canvas.  Don't worry about it getting too wet as it'll dry.  Cut the basting stitches away.

4.  Get a pair of tweezers (I found that these worked best), and start removing the threads of the canvas one by one.  It WILL take time to remove them all.

5.  Once all the threads of the canvas have been removed, you should have your design left. :)  Allow to dry, and iron on the wrong side to remove any wrinkles.

Since you can't use a hoop to help keep the fabric taut as you're stitching, this is best done by freehand only.  You can also do the same steps as above with a t-shirt or a sweatshirt, too, and use a hoop with those 2 items. :)  I'll be stitching a couple of t-shirts myself soon. :)

I hope that helps. :)  Good luck, and happy stitching! :)

Sincerely,

Angela :)

I have 22+ years of cross stitching experience, which includes stitching on Aida, evenweave linen, vinyl canvas, and have stitched a design on a cotton t-shirt using waste canvas. I have also worked with beads and blending filament in quite a few projects. I have made many projects which include cross stitched mugs, a keychain, pictures, magnets, and the cotton t-shirt. I can answer questions pertaining to preparing and cleaning fabric, preparing clothing for stitching, how many threads to be used on which Aida cloth, and will try to help you to the best of my ability with other questions you may have. I am prompt in my responses and usually answer within 24 hours from when you ask your question. I look forward to helping you. :)
