Question
Hi:  I work two full-time mentally taxing jobs and have been looking for a relaxing hobby; something I can do with my hands rather than with my mind.  That is certainly not a put down of needlecrafts or their practitioners.  On the contrary, I greatly admire folks who can create the many beautiful works of art I have seen over the years.

Can you give me any advice of getting started in this hobby, what to begin with, where to find supplies, etc.?

As background, I am a 59-year-old man.  In the day job, I am a university administrator.  I also write three columns a week for a local newspaper and do other frelance writing.

Again, if you could provide me with basic (beginners)information, how to get started, etc. I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks, Bart.

Answer
Hello Bart.
Thanks for the question.  Personally I find both needlepoint and x-stitch mind taxing.  I prefer to crochet or knit.  I can do either while watching tv or reading.

Once you get the hang of them they can be rather mindless relaxing crafts.

as to needlepoint and x-stitch here are some sites to get you started.  They will give the basics, materials needed, etc. plus free patterns.

Hope these will be of some help.  Please feel free to contact me anytime.
