Cross Stitch/Distorted fabric due to use of hoop

Question
Dear Angela,

I've been working on a large design by Dimensions called Enchanted Pegasus.  I ironed it yesterday and noticed that the stitches had become distorted where the hoop has stretched the fabric.  I haven't completed it yet, but have done a fair amount of it.  Is there a way to solve this?  When I get it framed will they stretch it so that this isn't noticeable?  Will washing help?  I'm really at a loss, as I don't want to continue if it's a lost cause!

Thank you very much in advance for your reply!

Kind regards,

Janine.

P.S.  I have a picture that I can e-mail you if that helps.

Answer
Hello, Janine :)

Typically, when you stitch a project, the fabric will get distorted.  I've had that happen to me, also.  What you can do is continue stitching your project, and when completed, place it in coolish water (so the colors don't run), allow it to soak for about 15 minutes (this will also help to remove any soiling that may have occurred when you were stitching it), and then rinse it under cool water.  Lay it on a clean towel, and roll the project into the towel, squeezing the excess water out of it.

Place it wrong side up on an ironing board, and using an iron preset to cotton WITH steam, iron the project until the wrinkles are out.  When ironing, you can try and stretch it back into shape while it's still damp.  When you go to frame it, they should stretch it for you before they frame it.  Just ask them to do that and let them know that it got slightly distorted while you were stitching it.

I would recommend that you use a Q-Snap type of hoop.  It's square, and it won't harm the threads of the stitching.  Plus, it won't dimple the fabric, either.

Good luck, and happy stitching! :)

Sincerely,

Angela :)

I have 22+ years of cross stitching experience, which includes stitching on Aida, evenweave linen, vinyl canvas, and have stitched a design on a cotton t-shirt using waste canvas. I have also worked with beads and blending filament in quite a few projects. I have made many projects which include cross stitched mugs, a keychain, pictures, magnets, and the cotton t-shirt. I can answer questions pertaining to preparing and cleaning fabric, preparing clothing for stitching, how many threads to be used on which Aida cloth, and will try to help you to the best of my ability with other questions you may have. I am prompt in my responses and usually answer within 24 hours from when you ask your question. I look forward to helping you. :)
