Cross Stitch/Enlarging a cross-stitch pattern

Question
Hello again Angela.

Thank you very much for your prompt response.
I went out today to buy my supplies and the only decent fabric I found was a 17 count Aida (or 6 count in centimeters) It’s an odd count, but I’ve measured it several times. Since it’s smaller, I’ve decided to do a stitch over 2 threads, and in addition, double my stitches.
My question is, would I still use two strands for the cross stitch or would it be better to use more? Would I also increase the amount of threads for the back stitches?

Well, thank you very much again.
I’ll try to send you a picture of the finished design (hopefully sometime soon!)

Sincerely

Answer
Hello again, Dani :)

With regards to the amount of strands for this, you could experiment on a small piece of it, and stitch a few rows using 2 strands at first, then 3, then 4, and see how much coverage the floss does on the fabric.

For backstitching, you could again experiment... Try using 1 strand at first, and if that doesn't gives you the effect that you're looking for, try using 2 strands.  There are some patterns that require 2 strands of floss for backstitching.  The only limit to cross stitching and what you can do with it is your imagination. :)

Good luck, and happy stitching! :)

Sincerely,

Angela :)

I have 22+ years of cross stitching experience, which includes stitching on Aida, evenweave linen, vinyl canvas, and have stitched a design on a cotton t-shirt using waste canvas. I have also worked with beads and blending filament in quite a few projects. I have made many projects which include cross stitched mugs, a keychain, pictures, magnets, and the cotton t-shirt. I can answer questions pertaining to preparing and cleaning fabric, preparing clothing for stitching, how many threads to be used on which Aida cloth, and will try to help you to the best of my ability with other questions you may have. I am prompt in my responses and usually answer within 24 hours from when you ask your question. I look forward to helping you. :)
