Cross Stitch - Figuring how much floss is needed

Expert: Vinette de Phillipe - 3/4/2006

Question
Hello Vinette:  I'm hoping you are still out there.  I have done counted cross stitch from kits before but now I have bought a couple of patterns which have the colors indicated that I need but not how much of each color.  Do you know a way to calculate how much of a particular color I would need for the chart that I have?  Thank you for any help that you can give.  Lyn

Answer
HI Lyn
did some searching and found this answer to the question asked by another person

Sorry to put up two answers, but I thought of something else I do
which might help. though I should warn you it takes discipline and
practice to make it work.  Before you start any stitching, look carefully
at the pattern and count how many symbols there are of the colour you want
to stitch.  If you have measured how many stitches you can get from some
length of floss, you can cut the right amount, and if you use a loop
start, you only have one end to finish, and new thread the next time you
come to the same symbol.
As an example, with a meter length of floss, using a loop start, you
can stitch somewhere around 40 to 50 stitches at 16 stitches per inch
(obviously with two threads in the needle).  40 stitches if they are
single and somewhat scattered;  50+ if it is a substantial area of the same
colour and you are stitching rows of Danish.  If you are at a different
canvas size, Kathy Dyer has a table on her web site.
I have been doing this for so long, that I can just estimate how much
thread I need, and most of the time I am about right.  But dont think you
can do this sort of thing well the first time you try it.  HTH.

Here is another source (I think) that looks pretty good for help with thread.

I hope one of these will be of help to you.
