Cross Stitch/Finishing previously started project
Expert: Angela - 4/18/2006
QuestionI started a cross stitch piece but when my when my husband suddenly died, I put it down. It has been left in the hoop for several years but I would like to finish it.
I have the floss I originally purchased, but feel I should wash the piece before I pick up where I started.
Is this the correct way to proceed? There is one significant area that is a continuation so any color difference will be noticeable.
Thank you.
AnswerHello, Peggy :)
I'm so sorry to hear that your husband passed away. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you. *HUGS*
As far as restarting your project, you CAN wash it in a solution of mild soap (Woolite or even dishwashing detergent will work), and barely warm water, more on the cooler side so that the colors don't run. Let it sit in the water for about 5 minutes, and then gently swish it around to remove any excess dirt. IF you see any further dirt, use a clean (preferably brand new) toothbrush and gently brush the soiled areas. Lay it on top of a towel, and then roll it into the towel to remove excess water, squeezing it as you go along.
Unroll it from the towel, and then lay flat on an ironing board. Iron it (preheat the iron at a low to medium cotton setting) on the wrong side, and allow to air dry. After it's dry, you can restart it where you left off. Unfortunately, the dyes these days have changed and you may find that the colors won't match the previous colors that you used.
I would highly recommend using a square hoop called Q-Snap as it doesn't dimple your fabric at all. In fact, you just lay the project over the frame of it, and then snap the 4 sides overtop of that, too. It's much easier to use than those conventional embroidery hoops, and I've been using these for quite a long time. :) Have a very small one, then a larger one, and then larger after that. :)
I hope that helps you with your project. Feel free to contact me again if you need any further assistance, and I'll do my best to help you. ;)
Sincerely,
Angela :)
