Question
I am about to begin a cross stitch project that uses 22 count antique white hardanger (1 over 1).  The instructions to not specify how many cotton DMC threads to use for the basic stitching.  Are there any rules?  This is my first try with hardanger.  thank you

Answer
Hello, Yolanda :)

You and I are both new at hardanger, as I've never tried it before, either.  From asking questions on another board, it is suggested that perle cotton is used for the stitches, and you just use 1 strand of it.

I have just recently purchased this book:

As it was said that this is the best tool on how to start hardanger, and how to fix mistakes as you stitch along.  If you can, I would highly recommend getting this book, as well.  After reading through it briefly, it appears to be very straight forward for both of us beginners.

You CAN use DMC thread, too, and for starters, I would try using 1 strand, and see how that covers the fabric.  If not, use 2 strands.  That's just an idea. :)

Also, I have read that after you stitch ALL the stitches, you then cut your thread.  Be sure that you have a very sharp pair of scissors where you can get close to the stitches themselves, but not cut them, of course.

I wish you good luck on your new project, and please keep me posted if you'd like. :)

Sincerely,

Angela :)

I have 22+ years of cross stitching experience, which includes stitching on Aida, evenweave linen, vinyl canvas, and have stitched a design on a cotton t-shirt using waste canvas. I have also worked with beads and blending filament in quite a few projects. I have made many projects which include cross stitched mugs, a keychain, pictures, magnets, and the cotton t-shirt. I can answer questions pertaining to preparing and cleaning fabric, preparing clothing for stitching, how many threads to be used on which Aida cloth, and will try to help you to the best of my ability with other questions you may have. I am prompt in my responses and usually answer within 24 hours from when you ask your question. I look forward to helping you. :)
