Cross Stitch/Stamped Cross Stitch Baby Quilt
Expert: Angela - 12/3/2007
QuestionQUESTION: I am going to do a baby quilt for my sister, and I am having trouble finding a quilt that is not pre-finished. Do you know where I can find some that aren't finished already. I don't know if I would get one that is finished because the back would like pretty bad. Let me know if you have any suggestions.
Thanks
ANSWER: Hello, Robin :)
You MAY be able to find a stamped cross stitch quilt at either Hobby Lobby or Michaels. As far as stitching onto one, you will have to go through all of the material (top material, batting and the bottom material). If you don't look like the look of the back of your project, you can always finish it off with a piece of fabric to cover the stitching. There is no other way to stitch onto a quilted item like that. I've stitched onto a quilted baby bib once before, and I didn't need to cover the back of it.
The other option is to use waste canvas if you can't find any stamped cross stitched baby quilts. If you haven't used waste canvas before, feel free to email me, and I'll help you through it. :)
I hope that helps. Good luck, and happy stitching! :)
Sincerely,
Angela :)

QUESTION: What is waste canvas? I haven't tried Hobby Lobby yet.
Thanks
ANSWER: Hello, Robin :)
Waste canvas is a product that is similar to the needlepoint canvas that you use to stitch onto wearable items like t-shirts, sweatshirts, or other items. Once you have finished stitched your design, you simply wet a cloth, dampen the canvas, and start pulling the waste canvas threads out one at a time with tweezers. :) It's very simple to use. :)
I hope this helps. :)

QUESTION: When I am putting the piece of fabric on the back to cove up my stitches, do I only do a border stitch or do I need to make some stitches in the middle of the quilt?
Thanks
AnswerHello, Robin :)
I would think that a border stitch would be sufficient. However, once you have done the border stitch, and you're not satisfied with how the fabric is laying on the back, you may decide, then, to do some further stitches.
I hope that helps. Good luck, and happy stitching! :)
Sincerely,
Angela :)
