Question
years ago I saw a b/w horror flick that featured an artist who was controlled by a witch in a painting and he would go out in the city and hunt women.  I think the witch had been burned at the stake for her beliefs and was seeking revenge.  There was one scene where the vampire artist chases a woman into a pool.  thanks maybe Italian with dubbing in English

Answer
Hi Ralph,

I think the movie you are looking for is an Italian film called "Un Angelo per Satana" aka "An Angel for Satan". It was released in 1966. A review from www.missinglinkclassichorror.co.uk follows:

"Harriet De Montebruno, (Barbara Steele), visits a European village and becomes possessed by the spirit of Belinda, a 200 year old witch when a strange statue with her likeness is dredged out of a local lake. As the witch she starts to seek out her victims, while an artist, (Anthony Steffan), hired to restore the statue tries to help her overcome the possession. Meanwhile the evil Count of Montebruno, (Claudio Gora), and the malevolent Ilda, (Aldo Berti), hypnotise Harriet to become the witch whenever they please.
One of the more boring and less spooky Steele horror films although a poetic atmosphere pervades the work.

A beautiful b&w mystery movie, shot in 1966, but looks like having been made in the 40s - which is perfectly alright for me in this case. Sculptor Roberto (Anthony `Django' Steffen) arrives in a small village to restore an ancient statue. He meets a woman (Barbara `Mask of Satan' Steele) who bears an amazing resemblance to the statue. Mysterious cases of death happen, and soon she is supposed to be a reborn witch by the superstitious villagers."

Also, here is a link to a short video clip excerpt from the film:

Best of luck, and let me know if this was the movie you were looking for.
