DHTML - How much longer will XP be available?

Expert: Jim Stiles - 6/18/2008

Question
Dear Jim,
I have a simple question that I thunk you can help me with.

There was a scare last year that XP had been withdrawn from the market, but MSFT decided to sell it for another year.

How mucj longer do you think XP will be available? I don't want the slow. RAM-devouring Vista and my current XP Media Center PC is almost dead and I'm broke to boot so I don't want to have to buy a new one right now if I can wait, but never want Vista so I'll bight the bullet if I have to because Gates wants every last nickel there is and will get it by making everyone buy Vista. How much longer do you think XP will be available. Thank you very much. This isn't a DHTML question, but you're the only PC expert of any kind I've ben able to reach at Allexperts after days of trying.
Please help me. I've had 95 and 98SE - hated them both, but love XP so want to know how much longer you thinl I have so I can budget it. Thank you, thank you, thank you. -JB :)

Answer
The good news is Microsoft extended the life cycle for Windows XP.
The bad news is the last date you can purchase this OS is July 30, 2008. Unfortunately, most companies, like Dell for instance, stopped offering XP for most of its computers on the 13th.

Feeling the same way you do about Vista, I went ahead and purchased a new machine with XP Professional, eeven though my current machine is not having any problems. I simply had to make sure I wasn't forced to deal with Vista. I suggest you find a machine of your liking very soon, bite the bullet and buy it now, before it's too late.

Jim.
