Subject: anal gland release

Question
Hi,
I have a 3 yr.old,15 lb.dachshund.When we are holding him and rubbing him on our lap he gets very relaxed. The next thing you know there is a horrible smell and anal gland fluid is all over us. This happens at least once a week. What can we do? I don't want to quit holding my dog.
Thanks, debi

Answer
Sounds like his anal glands need to be expressed.  Take him to your vet and have him checked and expressed.  Owners can do it but I do not do it - rather have it done.  :)  Anyway, it could also mean he has an infection so best to be sure to get him checked - that is not normal.
