Experience I have worked with dachshund rescue for over 4 years and rescued about 300 dachshunds, have owned dachshunds all my life, and have worked with special needs, puppy mills dogs, and other breeds as well.
Question I am looking at getting a doxie puppy from a person that my friend knows. I am a little concerned though because she is only 4.5 wks. old and the people are ready to sell her. They are "weaning" her and giving her puppy food (which they told me they are softening and putting in her mouth). Also, her eyes seem a little bluish, is this normal for this age of dog?
Answer That is way too young - you are right. State laws do not usually allow such young ones to be adopted until 8 weeks. A 4.5 week old is not able to eat real food yet and should be on baby cereal. Blue eye are not normal unless she has dapple in her. Would you mind sending me a private response and letting me know who this is? I would really like to help them if they need to let pups go so young - we can take them and make sure they are healthy.
