About Fred Goodwin
Expertise
My particular expertise is Cowboys history from 1960-1988 (the Landry era); I'm also a Cowboys book fanatic (I have almost 200 different Cowboys-related titles), and I also collect Cowboys football cards (but stopped in 93). But I am not an expert in the value of cards or collectibles – so please don't ask.

Before you ask: "So-and-so" almost certainly DID NOT PLAY for the Cowboys -- trust me! Before you ask me, ask the guy for proof!

Finally, I DO NOT ANSWER “PRIVATE” QUESTIONS! My work requires research, so the results must be made public.

Experience
I had a Cowboys webpage recognized around the Internet as the authoritative list of Cowboys links, and I have a Cowboys book collection second to none (200 titles). In addition to my book collection, I have every Cowboys media guide back to 1960, which makes researching questions much easier.

Subject: Changing Uniforms

Question
I notice that while the Cowboys basic uniform has not changed greatly since the 70s, there have been subtle changes to the numbers over the years.  First getting rid of those extra "lips" in the 80s, then I notice they went to the extra-bold numbers from the 90s Super Bowls, then they changed ever-so-slightly again from then to now, namely that they're now sewn-on and the "5" has gone from a tapered corner to a square-edge in the middle (yes I notice these things), but I'm not sure when the thicker numbers or the sewn-on numbers first came.  The "road" unis seem to follow a different pattern entirely but that's for another question.

Answer
David:

That's very observant.  The "lips" as you call them are actually called "serifs", and Cowboys uniforms featured block serif numbers from the beginning in 1960.

But the serifs never disappeared; "full" serifs were worn from 1960-1981.  The numbers went to a "semi-serif" in 1982, and that's what they still wear (some teams wear numbers w/o serifs, these are called "sans-serif"; an example is the Chicago Bears uniforms).

The Cowboys increased the thickness of the numbers in 1986.  The change in the "5" happened in 1997.  Sorry, but I don't know when they began sewing numbers.  I'll keep looking and if I find anything, I'll let you know.

I hope this (mostly) answers your questions.
