About Duke Ha
Expertise
I have extensive knowledge of the 1990's-Present Dallas Cowboys teams. Specifically, team uniforms, equipment, and so forth. I own numerous Cowboys memorabilia and would love to one day write a book on the evolution of the team's uniforms dating back to their inception in 1960. I may not be able to answer most Cowboys questions prior to the 1990's as I was but a youth at the time :-).

Experience
I make annual trips to see the Cowboys at Texas Stadium. I have a library of Cowboys books, dvd's and VHS tapes. I have recorded nearly all games dating back since the 1998 season. I am an artist, so most of my collections such as cards and photos are not for value, but rather for reference. I appreciate the asthetics of the Cowboys and the game of football. As a hobby, I customize and paint McFarlane Dallas Cowboy figures to near exact detail as their live counterparts. I own several game used items, autographs, and roughly 10-12 authentic jerseys with 3 different manufacturers.

Publications
I have no known publications. However, as of October 16, 2006, my written work and art has mostly been seen on the Wikipedia topic the Dallas Cowboys- uniforms/logos.

Education/Credentials
Associates of Arts in Liberal Arts, Associates of Arts in Graphic Design, Bachelor of Arts in Studio Arts with emphasis in Illustration. My dream would be, of course, to work for the Dallas Cowboys organization possibly for their marketing and design team. The Dallas Cowboys annual bluebooks and game programs have always interested me.

Question
I notice that while the Cowboys basic uniform has not changed greatly since the 70s, there have been subtle changes to the numbers over the years.  First getting rid of those extra "lips" in the 80s, then I notice they went to the extra-bold numbers from the 90s Super Bowls, then they changed ever-so-slightly again from then to now, namely that they're now sewn-on and the "5" has gone from a tapered corner to a square-edge in the middle (yes I notice these things), but I'm not sure when the thicker numbers or the sewn-on numbers first came.  The "road" unis seem to follow a different pattern entirely but that's for another question.

Answer
Hey David,
Wow, you've got a very keen eye for detail, which is a good thing because you taught me something.  I did not notice the slight change to the number "5" on the jerseys which from the looks of all of my Dallas Cowboy Bluebooks came in the 1997 season.  The changes I have noticed usually come when the team changes jersey manufacturers.  Now identifying what Cowboy jersey was used in what year is difficult because the team occassionally re-used older jerseys as new ones.  Here is a brief rundown of the different manufacturers over the years.

1990-91 - no apparent logos (Possibly Sandknit or Russell)
1992 - Russell Athletic
1993-94 - Apex One
1995 - no logos as Apex One went out of business (possible some still Apex jerseys or another company called Ripon)
1996-2000 - Nike
2001-present - Reebok

If you have any old photos, take a close look at Emmitt Smith's "22" from 1990-1993 compared to his "22" of 1994 and on.  You'll notice that not only is the number bolder and thicker, but the top portion of the "2" is longer in the later years before it starts to taper.  Another thing I have noticed is that on Deion's "21", the taper of the "1" at the top tended to curve compared to Julius Jones' "1" tend to just taper straight.

So I hope that answered your first question, but no telling what other subtle changes the team makes year after year.  As for when they went to tackle-twill, well that happened in the 2000 season, Nike's last year of manufacturing for the team.  That was the year the Cowboys wore the Tom Landry fedora patch on the left side of their chest to honor the life of former head coach Tom Landry who died of Leukemia.  That was also Troy Aikman's last season and Terrell Owens "celebrating on the star incident".  Hope that helps and thanks for asking!!!
