Question The questions I'm asking below are not about the Cowboys in particular but about today's NFL in general.
On a typical NFL team depth chart today, there is usually a position labeled "Running Back." Does this Running Back on the depth chart in reality usually only play the role of the Halfback and not the role of a Fullback?
Answer Well, that actually is a very good question.
That position " Running" back is very generic and it can mean different things to different teams. For the most part, gone are the days where the Full back was the main runing back carrying the ball...ala Larry Csonka of the old days. For the most part, the so called fullback is primarily a blocking back in today's league.
With that said, That postions "Running Back" to a pass oriented team may just BE another halfback who comes in on specialty situations and catches more than runs...like Kevin Faulk of the patriots. Or, he can be untilized more for back up running OR just another halfback in general. Again, it really depends on the team's offensive orientation.
Thanks, Rick
