AboutFred Goodwin Expertise My particular expertise is Cowboys history from 1960-1988 (the Landry era); I'm also a Cowboys book fanatic (I have almost 200 different Cowboys-related titles), and I also collect Cowboys football cards (but stopped in 93). But I am not an expert in the value of cards or collectibles – so please don't ask.
Before you ask: "So-and-so" almost certainly DID NOT PLAY for the Cowboys -- trust me! Before you ask me, ask the guy for proof!
Finally, I DO NOT ANSWER “PRIVATE” QUESTIONS! My work requires research, so the results must be made public.
Experience I had a Cowboys webpage recognized around the Internet as the authoritative list of Cowboys links, and I have a Cowboys book collection second to none (200 titles). In addition to my book collection, I have every Cowboys media guide back to 1960, which makes researching questions much easier.
Question I've asked questions before on Cowboys' uniform history and have gotten very helpful answers--thank you. My current question--Given that Jerry Jones is apparently blindly in love with navy blue and that we will never see royal blue jerseys as long as he is there(this probably not being the biggest issue Cowboy fans have with him at the moment)do you know or could you direct me to where the regular season games Dallas played during the royal blue jersey era are documented. I think I have most of the ones from the 1970s and 1980 figured, as well as playoff games. However, there are definitely some from the 1960s I don't know--one of them being a game against the Falcons which I am guessing might be from Atlanta's first season in 1966 in a game at Fulton County Stadium. Thank you in advance for your help.(By the way, during Jimmy Johnson's tenure the Cowboys always had royal blue jerseys with the metallic silver pants which led me to always hope they would be re-established during regular games. I never understood why the switch back was not made and the navy jersey/silver pants was kept. Oh well)
Answer Sam:
I too, was a fan of the royal blue jersies, but don't blame Jerry for the current navy blue color. That was Tex Schramm's idea, and he made the switch for the 1981 season. I've since grown to like the navy blues, but I don't care for all the tinkering that Jerry does with them every year.
By the way, the "throwbacks" that the Cowboys currently wear aren't true throwbacks for one main reason: they are navy blue rather than royal blue. All the other NFL teams use throwback colors as well as throwback designs, except Dallas!
To answer your question: I am not aware that the NFL keeps stats on W-L record based on the color of a team's jersies. All I can suggest is that you contact the Cowboys directly:
Dallas Cowboys
One Cowboys Parkway
Irving, TX 75063
By the way, the Cowboys have worn navy blue since 1981, when they made the switch from royal blue, including during Jimmy Johnson's tenure as head coach (1989-1993). You can google any of the football card websites (e.g., Beckett.com) and pull up pictures of the Cowboys of that era to confirm this.
