AboutDuke Ha Expertise I have extensive knowledge of the 1990's-Present Dallas Cowboys teams. Specifically, team uniforms, equipment, and so forth. I own numerous Cowboys memorabilia and would love to one day write a book on the evolution of the team's uniforms dating back to their inception in 1960. I may not be able to answer most Cowboys questions prior to the 1990's as I was but a youth at the time :-).
Experience I try to make annual trips to see the Cowboys in Texas every season. I have a library of various Dallas Cowboy books, football cards, player photos, DVD's and VHS tapes. I have recorded nearly all games from 1998-2007. I am also an artist, so most of my collections such as cards, photos, or memorabilia are not for value, but rather for reference. I appreciate the visual asthetics of the Dallas Cowboys and the game of football. As a hobby, I occasionally customize and paint McFarlane Dallas Cowboy figures to near exact detail as their live counterparts. I also own several game used items, autographs, and roughly 10-12 authentic jerseys with 3 different manufacturers.
Education/Credentials Associates of Arts in Liberal Arts, Associates of Arts in Graphic Design, Bachelor of Arts in Studio Arts with emphasis in Illustration. My dream would be, of course, to work for the Dallas Cowboys organization possibly for their marketing and design team. The Dallas Cowboys annual bluebooks and game programs have always interested me.
Question Did the cowboys ever have their Game jerseys made by Russell Athletics? I read your previous posts about them using Apex for 1994 and that the numbers were screened on from 1992-1999. I was just curious if they ever used Russell jerseys on the field. I am mostly concerned with the white jerseys.
Thanks for your help!
Answer Hey Brian,
To answer your question, yes Russell Athletic did make the Dallas Cowboys game jerseys for the 1991 and 1992 seasons. I am not sure who manufactured them prior to 1991, but I do know that Sand Knit was a producer for the team sometime in the 1980's. The 1991 season was I believe the first time the NFL incorporated the NFL shield on the V-neck collar and the first time (atleast in photos I've researched) the Cowboys had manufacturer logos present on the sleeves of their jerseys. The team may have recycled old Russell Athletic jerseys for later seasons when Apex One took over the duties and just stitched their logo on the sleeves. The same happened when the Cowboys transitioned from Apex One (1993-94) to no logos in 1995 (possibly Ripon on some jerseys) to Nike (1996-2000).
Thank you for reading my previous posts Brian and I hope I was of some help. Although I must say I am only positive about the team using screened printed numbers from 1992-1999 as I have witnessed some of these jerseys personally. I believe the Cowboys started using screen printed jerseys right after the Staubach era, possibly the 1981 season. My expertise is mainly with the 1990-present Cowboys and other than their "Double-Star" jerseys, I believe they have used screenprinted jerseys all the way to till the 1999 season. Thanks for asking!!! take care
