Question
One of my co-workers had brought up at work one day that he
knew all about this "Dallas Flex Defense" and how it was the
most powerful defense ever created; especially against the run.
However he will not tell me any of the specifics of it (ie, how it
works, what the formation is, etc.). Can you tell me everything
you know? I'd like to use it on my highschool football team

Answer
WELL FIRST I DO NOT AGREE IT WAS THE MOST POWERFUL DEFENSE EVER.THE BEAR 46 DEFENSE GETS MY VOTE.THE FLEX WAS CREATED BY TOM LANDRY.IT"S PURPOSE WAS TO SHRINK THE FIELD TO REDUCE THE RUSHING LANES FOR THE OPPOSING OFFENSE.IT DID THIS BY A OFFSET DEFENSIVE LINE.THE LEFT END AND RIGHT TACKLE WOULD LINE UP ONE TO TWO YARDS OFF THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE TO READ THE PLAY AS IT HAPPENS.WHILE THE LINEBACKERS AND DEFENSIIVE BACKS WOULD THEN FILL THE GAPS.IT COULD LITERALLY DICTATE WHAT PLAY THE OPPOSING OFFENSE RAN BY TAKING AWAY THE RUNNING GAME.IT WAS IN THE TOP FIVE OF THE GREAT DEFENSES BUT IN MY OPINION NOT THE BEST. GREAT QUESTION,HOPE THAT CLEARS IT UP.
