Question I was just wondering about Roger Staubach. Although he was 38 years old @ the time of his retirement, his stats indicated that he was still seemingly playing very, very well. Was the general consensus that he was going to stick around a year or two, or was he already planning on retirement? I know concussions may have been an issue, but was he looking forward to continue playing into the 1980's?
Thanks
Answer Well, here is the skinny on Roger. Yes, the cowboys
did expect Roger to continue playing for a couple of years into the 80's. This was mentioned by Tom Landry himself.
Concussions were really not the reason Roger retired.
Roger hinted to retirement early in his last season , 1979,
but most fans and observers did not expect it to happen
for another couple of years. Ironically, Roger had one of his greatest seasons in 1979 and his best game ever in the season finale, an epic 35-34 over Washington to win the eastern division.
