AboutFred Goodwin Expertise My particular expertise is Cowboys history from 1960-1988 (the Landry era); I'm also a Cowboys book fanatic (I have almost 200 different Cowboys-related titles), and I also collect Cowboys football cards (but stopped in 93). But I am not an expert in the value of cards or collectibles – so please don't ask.
Before you ask: "So-and-so" almost certainly DID NOT PLAY for the Cowboys -- trust me! Before you ask me, ask the guy for proof!
Finally, I DO NOT ANSWER “PRIVATE” QUESTIONS! My work requires research, so the results must be made public.
Experience I had a Cowboys webpage recognized around the Internet as the authoritative list of Cowboys links, and I have a Cowboys book collection second to none (200 titles). In addition to my book collection, I have every Cowboys media guide back to 1960, which makes researching questions much easier.
Expert: Fred Goodwin Date: 10/30/2006 Subject: Scores from the mid 1960's
Question Fred,
I am trying to find a list of the scores of the Dallas Cowboys (and write-ups if available). I became a Cowboys fan in the 1960's when my father (a NY Giants) fan took us to the Cotton Bowl in 1965 or 1966 to see the NY Giants and Cowboys play. Like any kid, I picked the team opposite of my fathers choice - and picked the Cowboys to win. I remember they stomped them pretty good and I keep thinking the score was 49-7 (or somewhere around that). In a family feud, my father remembers it being a low score (17-10 in the Cowboys favor). I remember Bob Hays doing a 90+ yard run that day also. So, do you know of a link to the scores from back then and/or write-ups of old games? I appreciate your help!
Answer Steve:
You have a pretty good memory. The Cowboys beat the Giants in the 1966 season opener in the Cotton Bowl, 52-7. If your dad is a Giants' fan, its no wonder he recalls it differently!
The best source for info like this is the annual Cowboys media guide, available for $10-$15 from dallascowboys.com
There are several websites that list historical scores, but no sources that I know of that contain write-ups. Even the current media guide gives an overview only of the entire season, not individual games.
The Dallas Morning News (DMN) offers an excellent Dallas Cowbosy website, but to access the history section, you must pay a membership fee. Another option to access the DMN archive is from the public library. I am able to do that, but I hesitate to post the article (which I was able to find easily) due to copyright issues.
If you have a library account, you might ask your librarian if they can access the DMN Archive online. If so, look for the following article headline, dated Sep 19, 1966: "Cowboys Take One Giant Step, 52-7".
