I came to this link looking for the song.  My cousin had a 45 w/ the song on it when I was very young.  Few people remember it.  I was happy to at least see the lyrics written in partial.

That is true. At one time I had this song on a 45, but alas I have long since lost it. The lilly line went "Griese tried to throw the ball and did his very best, but Lilly chased him to the ten and laid down on his chest".

There was also a line "Landry smiled because he was happy as could be, for the final score was Dallas 24 Miami 3".

My name is Jim Weaver, I wrote and recorded the song and have one or two copies of it in 45RPM format. I have one copy autographed by Roger Staubach.  We sold 50,000 copies of the record in 6 weeks, in the Dallas area. I also userd the same tracks to do a a Super Bowl 12 record.

more lyrics to the song:

At half the score was ten to three with dallas looking mean, thomas ran it in again and made it seventeen; and Howley stole a Griese pass but didn't get the score, Roger threw to Ditka and made it twenty four.  i am trying to find the song and singer as well

I have this 45 somewhere.

more lyrics:

Greasy tried to throw the ball

and did his very best

but Lilly chased him to the 10 and laid down on his chest.

Roger scrambled several plays

and scrambled several more

Clark caught it on the field and Dallas got the score.

When the fight was over and the smoke had cleared the scene,

the final score was Dallas 24, Miami 3.

something else, something else...,

The Cowboys are the champs and you'd better not forget it,

The undisputed champs of the whole United States.

No idea where that thing is at the moment and thats all that I can come close to remembering right now.

Miami got the offense back

and Csonka dropped the ball,

and Howley snatched it for the 'pokes

and fell beneath the wall.

And Griese tried to pass the ball

and did his very best,

but Lilly chased him to the goal

and laid down on his chest.

The Dolphins ___ ____ ___

But they couldn't stop the drive that we started long ago,

Gave the ball the Duane(Walt) and he kept on a-runnin'

Gettin' ever closer gonna win the Super Bowl.

pinkfloyd wrote at 2009-11-13 05:53:22
there were also several lines about specific players' scoring, like

Roger passed for several yards and scrambled several more

And Clark trotted on the field and Dallas got a score.

and

then Staubach threw to Ditka and they made it seventeen (or maybe that was twenty-four?).

pinkfloyd wrote at 2009-11-13 06:01:30
OH--I almost forgot!  I remember the second lyric went...

Miami took the kick and they began to runnin'

Tryin' to make their way to the Dallas Cowboy goal.

Made just seven yards and they had to punt to Dallas,

Gettin' ever closer, gonna win the Super Bowl.

I have the 45 litterally sitting in front of me.  I believe my sister has a turntable and I will post the lyrics as soon as I can

based on my memory and the generous cotributions here - this is my best guess - I know I am missing some stuff:

It was early January and the Cowboy jet put down,

for their second shot at Super Bowl in ole New Orleans town.

They came to play the Dolphins from down Miami way.

The Umpire fired his pistol and the game was under way.

The Dolphins took the kick and they began a - runnin’, trying to make their way to the Dallas Cowboy Goal. They took seven yards and they had to punt to Dallas, Cowboys started out to win the Super Bowl.

Griese tried to throw the ball and did his very best, but Lilly chased him to the 10 and laid down on his chest.

Chorus: We held the ball and The Dolphins kept a commin’

But they couldn’t stop the drive we started long ago

Gave the ball to Walt and he kept on a-runnin'

Gettin' ever closer gonna win the Super Bowl.

The Dolphins got the offense back and Csonka dropped the ball.  Howley snatched it for the pokes and fell beneath the wall.

Roger scrambled several play and scrambled several more.

Then Clark brought it on the field and Dallas got a score.

The Dolphins started looking big as Dallas took the lead,

But Roger threw the ball to Lance and Dallas scored again.

At the half the score was 10 to 3 with the Cowboys looking mean. Then Thomas ran it in again and made it seventeen.

Howley stole a Griese pass but didn't get the score,

So Roger threw the ball to Ditka and they made it 24.

Chorus:  We held the ball and The Dolphins kept a comin’,

But they couldn't stop the drive that we started long ago,

Gave the ball to Duane and he kept on a-runnin'

Gettin' ever closer gonna win the Super Bowl.

Landry smiled because he was happy as could be, for the final score was Dallas 24 Miami 3.

I have the 45 and will post the actual lyrics if I can find a turntable

The flip side of the single is still my favorite cowboys song.

Everybody Love's a winner.

Everybody Love's a winner, like the cowboys football team.

A cowboy fights to be a winner

They're the team thats on the beam the dallas cowboys are supreme.

So let's all raise our glasses to the cowboys,

give a toast as we watch them play.

Let's give 3 cheers for the cowboys.

The best in the U.S.A.

:)

More

I actually think the verse went...

The dolphins started looking beat as dallas took the lead.

The doomsday boys came on the field thier eye's was filled with greed.

Well Greise tried to throw the ball and did his very best

but lilly chased him to the 10 and laid down on his chest

The Landry line was just before the end. which went..

It took us many years and we fought hard to win it.

The Super Bowl is ours and we want the world to say..

The Cowboys are the champs and you better not forget it,

The undisputed champs of the whole united states.

The battle at New Orleans had ended up just right

I went to college out of state - this is around 1980 - and felt entitled to wear my fandom on my sleeve, so brought along the old Levee Singers 45 from SB VI.  Turns out people LOVED that flip side.  I actually got an email from a guy just a few months ago - a non-pokes fan - who wanted to know where he could find the song.

Played the heck out of that record, but now can't find it (hello, Mr. Weaver?  I'd love to buy that CD!).  Pretty sure I remember the words, though.  Obnoxious, yet snappy!

Expertise

My particular expertise is Dallas Cowboys history from 1960-1988 (the Landry era); I'm also a Cowboys book fanatic (I have almost 300 different Cowboys-related titles), and I also collect Cowboys football cards (but stopped in 93). But I am not an expert in the value of cards or collectibles – so please don't ask.

Before you ask: "So-and-so" almost certainly DID NOT PLAY for the Cowboys -- trust me! Before you ask me, ask the guy for proof!

Finally, I DO NOT ANSWER “PRIVATE” QUESTIONS! My work requires research, so the results must be made public.

Experience

I had a Cowboys webpage recognized around the Internet as the authoritative list of Cowboys links, and I have a Cowboys book collection second to none (approx. 300 titles). In addition to my book collection, I have every Cowboys media guide back to 1960, which makes researching questions much easier.
