Question Questions:
1. What is (was) the actual, real-life location of the ranch shown in the outside scenes of the the TV show "Dallas?"
2. Whereever it is, is this ranch open to the public? Can one take a tour, buy postcards and momentos, etc?
3. Did the "Dallas" cast and crew actually film the weekly outside scenes at this ranch location, or were they filmed on a set somewhere in California?
I would appreciate any information you can give me to answer these questions! Your reviews indicate that you know a lot about this show...thanks again. Sue R.
Answer Hi Sue...
Okay, here goes...
1-Southfork Ranch is located about 30 minutes northwest of downtown Dallas. It's pretty much in the middle of nowhere. It's all farmland out there.
2-Yes, it is open to the public for tours. I was there a couple years ago. The tour takes you around the outside of the ranch, and then the inside of the Ewing household. However, the inside looks nothing like it did on the show. The house is ALOT smaller in real life than on TV. There is a very big gift shop also.
3-For the first few seasons, most of the outside scenes were shot on the actual ranch itself. However, some episodes that included a lot of scenes inside the house were shot completely on sets in California. The easy way to spot if they are on the California set or at the ranch in Dallas is by looking at the garage windows in the driveway. They look entirely too fake. Plus, when the actors and actresses walk and talk, you can tell that they are on a stage, and not actually outdoors.
