Subject: correct position for splits

Question
Hi!
I am trying out for a dance team and one of the requirements is to be able to do front splits on both sides.  I'd like to know the correct form for a front split in dance -- is the rear leg and knee turned in (with knee facing the floor) or turned out (with knee facing the side).  I've searched the internet high and low and find conflicting information.
Thanks!!

Answer
Hey Joanna! Well you're correct in saying that many people have different opinions when it comes to the position of the back leg in splits. The way I was trained in ballet was to always have both legs turned out. Everyone usually turns out their front foot as much as possible so it would only make sense to have the back leg turned out with the inside arch of the foot on the ground. Basically this is an argument many teachers and students cannot resolve but if you assume that the splits are the position you will hit in a jete in the air then we would expect the back leg to be turned out. If I were you I would ask the coach of the potential team which way she would prefer and this way you will be doing exactly what she is looking for! Hope this helps and good luck on your audition!
