Experience I have worked training children in dancing, singing, and acting for the past 10 years. As the president of a not-for-profit professional children's stage choir, I have advised children and implemented their training to become professional musical theater actors and actresses. Question Hello,
I am going into my sophmore year in high school, and I'm interested in musical theater. My school is big on dancing and musical theater and I was thinking to join the orchasis (Dance team).....My goal is to be in the musical CATS! I've been taking dance at my school for P.E., and starting this summer I'm taking 3 classes a night in ballet, jazz, hip hop, modern, lyrical, musical theater, and tap...Not all in the same day, but you know what I mean. I really want to be in the musical cats, and will do anything....Any suggestions? I'm in the chicago area and was wondering if you know any good dance studios perhaps? Any tips to prepare me to be someday on CATS? As I know your not a singing coach, I'm working on that. lol. Any tips you have to make me a good dancer? Please tell me anything that you know and suggest! Thanks
Also someday I hope to be on you know CATS, Fosse, and Chicago, which are my 3 main goals.
Answer Hi
Ambition is a very good thing to have, so keep it up. In order to work in professional theater today, you will need not only dancing and singing but also acting, and it might be wise to learn a musical instrument, as well. If you want to be good at dancing or any of the above, you will need to train (as you are doing) so that you can become proficient in each of these skills. Training involves taking lessons as well as using them. I suggest that in addition to taking singing, dancing and acting lessons, you start small and audition for parts in plays not only as school, but elsewhere in your community, too. Try to work with as many companies as possible and remember when starting out that no part is too small. You may also want to consider continuing your studies in a Performing Arts College or Acting Program when you graduate from high school. Look into programs now so that you will be prepared for auditions when the time comes. You need to know what you are working towards in terms of school. Good luck with your training!
