Question I have an elderly Gentlman coming into the charity shop I help in, he was in a band in the 5o's I think. The name of the band was either Matheison or Masterson, not sure. He said they made a record and he is trying to find the Disc or if it has at any time been transfered to cassette.
Answer Hello Phyllis,
Thanks for your attention.
I can recall the vibraphonist Buddy Montgomery and electric bassist Monk Montgomery (1921-1982) that came together toform the Mastersounds (a melodic and easy listening bop group) with pianist Richie Crabtree and drummer Benny Barth in 1957. The band caught on for a few years, cutting ten
records in four years for Pacific Jazz, World Pacific, and
Fantasy. Wes Montgomery appeared on one of their 1958 albums, a set of songs from the play Kismet. After the
group disbanded in 1961, they had a brief reunion in 1965. The two Montgomery brothers had numerous opportunities to play with their more famous sibling under Wes' leadership throughout the 1960s.
Here goes their main discography:
1957 Jazz Showcase Introducing the Mastersounds (World Pacific)
1957 The King and I (World Pacific)
1958 Kismet (World Pacific) - considered their album pick
1958 The Flower Drum Song (World Pacific)
1959 Ballads and Blues (World Pacific)
1959 The Mastersounds in Concert [live] (World Pacific)
1959 The Mastersounds Play Horace Silver (World Pacific)
1959 Happy Holidays from Many Lands (World Pacific)
1961 Swinging with the Mastersounds (Original Jazz Classics)
1961 A Date with the Mastersounds (Fantasy)
1961 The Mastersounds on Tour (Fantasy)
2002 The Mastersounds (Fantasy)
So check it out these informations with that gentleman, and if I hit the target, I will go on search for some of their
albums, but if I didn't, please let me know and I will
proceed my research, ok?
