I'm trying this site for the first time, and I think I'm gonna love it. I have a simple question which has to do with early 90's dance music and I think you'll know the answer to it. I have a sample of the song and I would really want to know the name of it. The only problem is that all I can do is to provide you with a 40 sec. sample of the song, and I have no idea how. If you can help me, that would be great. Thank you.

Hello Mike !

Welcome to the dance music section.

The scope of dance music tunes is quite vast, but I'll try to help the best I can.
First, before sending samples, are there any vocals on the track ? if yes, maybe u can quote some lines as it might help. For example, if you'd write "everybody dance now", then I'd known immediately the song's name :)

Now, let's deal with the sample. Do you have it on a digital format (file)? If yes, then u can post me email or messaging program user name and we might continue from there.
As for copyright laws, any sample, even 2 seconds, is an infringement. However, for song ID usage, I suppose it's acceptable.

If u have it on a cd or cassette, then you'll need to use an audio program to rip the music into a file.
For cd, I'd recommend a great freeware proggie called "freeripmp3" -> http://www.mgshareware.com/

If on cassette, then you can use the windows recorder, albeit it won't give a good quality. After you've recorded the file, use freeripmp3 to encode it to mp3.

Now for the ID part. It's worth trying some professional music board, with a large community of dance music punters.

A good place to start will be www.ezboard.com where u can find many forums dedicated to dance music. just browse the forums there and try to locate the ones with a big community (I'll try to post links later).

Another place is http://www.globalunderground.co.uk/forum/index.php , the officail Global Underground forum. many scene veterans lurks there, and it's possible u can get some help.

You can also search google for "song ID forum", "song identification forum", and see if it returns some interesting links.

Hope this info helps. We're generally concenrating here on the industry and production side, but I'd be glad to help with this wee task

Thanks,
Uri

Thanx for responding so quickly. I have the sample on my hard drive and I hope what I give you are the correct partial words of the song. If not I can e-mail the sample, just provide me with the e-mail where to send it. Anyway, the song goes something like this:
-Girls out on the floor
-All the fat boys in
-Maximum respect
-Now hear this
-Hey fat boy
-I wanna make you smile
-Hey big boy
-Come play with me for a while
Thank u once again
