Question Scott- I hope you are the right man to ask, if not please steer me in the right direction. This might be lengthy but I want it to be clear.
I am working for a guy that has stored over 20 years of files. A lot of it is scholarly resources, like copies of articles from journals. A lot of it is previous work that he has done. But there are thousands of documents total. He has hired me to come and file the last 5 years worth the stuff that he hasn't been able to, or hasn't filed. This guy is a pack-rat and doesn't want to throw anything away. And according to his co-workers, he hires interns every year to come and do this for him. But usually they just sort of clean up the current mess without getting to the back-log. We have access to some high-power nice scanners and software that can turn all of the scans into searchable PDF's. I think that if I could convince him that it would work well he would let me scan all of his stuff into his own little searchable file system. Is there some feasible way that you know of that I can do that?
Answer There are loads of document management applications out there that will do it. If you are looking for something lowe end, I woukld recommend Paperport from Nuance. This can handel the scanning and will do and keyword index for searching.
