Question
Hi,

Is there a way to have Microsoft Office software to save two copies of a file when you click save? What I want to do is to save all my files onto my USB key, but I also want Word/Excel to save a spare copy in the My Documents folder in my computer. Is that possible without having to click on Save As.. twice? It's not that I'm too lazy to do it, it's just that I forget to do it most of the time and I'm scared that I might lose my key (I need my files in my USB key because I travel a lot and don't like carrying a laptop around with me).

If that's not possible, is there a software, like iTunes, that allows you to synchronize your files in your USB with a folder in your computer?

- Eric

Answer
Hi Eric,

Unfortunately, what you ask for is not possible through Word itself.

Now, from Word 2003 onwards, there is a backup file creation utility in Word but that creates a backup with .wbk extension in the same directory as the original file, so this is not going to help you in your quest to create a backup in another directory. Here is a link to this feature, if you are interested in exploring this further:

There are some open source programs available to synchronize two directories. I have not used any, and don't know how effective they are, but you may want to try one out. One of the better known utilities seems to be rsync, the details of which are in this website:

Hope this helps.

Regards, Krishna
