Hi John!  This is a great song!  It was popularized by Johnny Cash.  I take the song pretty literally.  A man died for forbidden love and friendship.  Even though he cheated with his best friend's wife, he was willing to give his life rather than have his friend find out.  The woman never said anything and let him die, but obviously mourned for him as she walked around his grave in a long black veil.  That's what I get from the song - a forbidden love story.  It's a great song...I like it a lot.  Thanks for your question!
