Answer
Hi Steve,
I seem to remember that Dave pretty much taught himself guitar, then was influenced in his early Virginia days by local musicians such as Tim Reynolds, Greg Howard, and Peter Griesar.  As for his singing, I don't know if he's ever had any formal training, or if he did, whether it was as a child/teenager, or once he started trying to write and perform music in his early 20s.

The only pictures I've ever seen that Dave drew are the now-common "firedancer" (a version of which is on the Stand Up CD art) and another one called the "dancing 8."  Both of these are drawings from very early in his career.

Hope this helps,
Andy
