Dave Matthews Band/Song Meanings
Expert: Kristen - 5/17/2005
QuestionHey Kristen,
I think I had asked you before about Dave's songs taking on the Carpe Diem outlook and living life to the fullest. I printed it out and saved it but now it is gone. I just wondered which ones of Dave's songs take on the Carpe Diem outlook and which lyrics in particular convey that. THANK YOU!
AnswerHi Andy! I think this was the response that I gave you before...Well, "Best Of What's Around" has the line "Whatever holds us down and if nothing can be done, we'll make the best of what's around." That's basically saying to make the best of what your life is, no matter
if something is holding you back. Your life will be better if you make the most of ot. "Lie In Our Graves" has the lines "I can't believe that we would lie in our graves wondering if we had spent our living days well. I can't believe that we would lie in our graves dreaming of things that we might have been." That's saying to live life to the fullest because you don't want to look back after it's all over and think to yourself that you wished you could have done more or done better, but now it's too late.
"Pig" has the line "Don't burn the day away." That's saying don't waste the time that you have left here on Earth. Death is inevitable, but regardless of what happens after we die, we can enjoy the time we have here through love. Don't waste your time. "Tripping Billies" has the
classic line "Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die." Basically, do whatever you want, have fun, cause tomorrow it could be all over. "Two Step" has the line "Celebrate we will cause life is short but sweet for
certain." Basically, we're gonna have fun while we're here because life is a gift, but it's so short. Hope these ideas help you! Thanks for your question!
