About Anne Dalmadge Expertise I can Answer any questions about lyrics, songs, albums, or pretty much any questions about the band, but my strong subject is lyrics and songs.
Experience I have been an avid Dave listener for four years, my brother got me into his music, we went to his last concert here together, I have all of his albums including Boyd's True Reflections, and can name almost all of his songs when i hear only about ten seconds or less of them.
Question What do you feel the meaning of the two songs are?
Answer Warehouse: I think it's about memories, and a place, the warehouse, is where the memories are kept, and you can always go back to the warehouse to revisit these memories. He talks about change, "The black cat's changing colors, but its not the colors that matter, but that they all fade away." He talks about going with the changes that come his way, "Keep all your sights on
The black cat changing colors
I can walk under ladders
And swim as the tides choose to turn me" How he can't stop them, because, "Life goes on." And then we see him talk about going to the warehouse with these memories, "My love I love to stay here
In the warehouse"
So much to say: I think this song is about being trapped mentally, feeling locked inside of yourself and you own thoughts: “Say my hell is the closet
I'm stuck inside
Can't see the light”
And trying to find release: “And my heaven is a nice house
in the sky
Got central heating
and I'm alright” “Can't see the light
Open up my head and let me out, little baby”
I think he talks about feeling like this for a very long time “ Here we have been standing
for a long, long time
Treading trodden trails for a long, long time”
Here he says what we all really know and feel: “I find sometimes it's easy
to be myself
Sometimes I find it's better to be somebody else”
I think this part is about how this bad mental state starts early: “I see you young and soft oh little baby
Little feet, little hands, little baby
One year of cryin' and the words creep up inside
Creep into your mind”
So basically, I think the song is about mental health.
