Expert: Jilly - 9/27/2004
Questionhi jilly,
would appreciate your help in some info --
1. is the song 'oh' written for or referring to dave's sister anne? i read somewhere that it was written for a grandparent.
2. who is grace or what does grace signify in 'grace is gone'?
thanks,
moon
AnswerMoon,
I have never heard anything bout "Oh" refering to daves sister Anne. He rarely talks about her or anything like that so I dont think it would be about her. I have also heard it was about a grandparent. The grandparent makes a lot of sense "sitting in your dusty chair" that sounds more grandparent like that older sister like. Anne's death was very personal to Dave and I just dont think he would express it like that in a song. You never know tho, but im going to stick with the grandparent theory.
And Grace is a good one. Many believe Grace was an ex girlfriend of Daves. The only serious ex girlfriend I know of is Julia Grey. However Dave has twin daughters with his wife Ashley there names are Grace Anne (yes after his sister) and Stella Busina. I seriously doubt Ashley would agree to let him name one of their daughters after an ex girlfriend. I believe Grace is Daves word to describe happiness. Grace is Gone is written about a lover dying. So he is saying his happiness is gone. Grace is also used in When the World Ends not in a name context but again just as a describing word. Again its a theory but I have had many conversations over Grace and all the DMB fans I know agree. And we all agree Grace was not an Ex due to the daughters name. I hope that helps you out. If you need further help let me know!
