Deafness/Hearing Impairment - Ringing and Buzzing in Ears

Expert: Harriet Jacobster, Au.D. - 11/21/2008

Question
When I get a sinus headache or sinus drainage after a day my ears will start ringing or buzzing and sometimes my teeth will start aching. I have lost alot of my hearing in my left ear and now my right is starting the same way.  I read something on "tinnitus" and was not sure if that was something I had.

Answer
Hi Tammy,
Tinnitus is simply noise in your ear(s) that does not come from an outside source.  It is a symptom, not a disease.  Tinnitus is caused by something, and that something can be neural (disorder of the nerves of the ear or brain) or mechanical such as a sinus infection.  Teeth can also ache from a sinus infection as the upper teeth are very close to the maxillary sinuses. If you are losing your hearing, you need to see an ear specialist (ENT) and have your hearing evaluated by an Audiologist.
Hope this helps.
