Question i'm writing on behalf of my 84 yr old sister-in-law - she says she has had a ticking in her ear for a long time but it's getting worse and interferes with her sleep - she has spoken to a number of medical persons but has received no help - would you have any encouraging info that i can pass on to her? thanking you in advance
Answer Hi Helen,
Your sister-in-law needs to be evaluated by an ENT and audiologist who can test her for stapedial myoclonus. Myoclonus is a rhythmic contraction of a middle ear muscle that causes a clicking sound in the ear. Sometimes it is even loud enough that you can put your ear against hers and hear it.
If your SIL indeed has myoclonus, this can usually be treated by sedatives.
Hope this helps.
