Deafness/Hearing Impairment - Hearing my voice loud

Expert: Harriet Jacobster, Au.D. - 4/21/2009

Question
I could hear other people around me as any other normal individuals do. However, people say I speak very softly. During conversations, I hear other people voices as loud as my voice so I never attempt to speak louder. I've been to different speech therapists to strengthen my voice, but nothing changed because my volume is tied up to my ears. If I hear the outside world at a normal level, but hear my voice loudly, are there therapies available to correct this?

Answer
Hi Ed,
You do not tell me whether or not you have had your hearing evaluated.

If not, you need to consult an ear specialist immediately and have your hearing evaluated. Without this data, no one can recommend the proper therapy.  You speech therapists should have insisted on an audiological evaluation before they treated you.

Hope this helps.
