Question Dr. Wilkinson, I am very annoyed by loud car stereos blasting rap music. Have you noticed younger patients suffering from hearling loss from loud music?
Answer Hi Mike,
You can have hearing loss from loud noise exposure (what is called a temporary or permanent threshold shift) but it shouldn't affect you if you are just hearing the car as it goes by. We do see threshold shifts in patients who have been to concerts and have stood or sat by the speakers. Noise such as gunshots close to the ear or airbag deployment can also cause hearing loss.
