Question
Hello,
I am going to be a freshmen in college. In highschool, I read the book and I passed the class. I expect college to be different. Because of my hearing loss (about 80% loss) I am worried about lecture type classes. I don't know sign language because of my parent's lack of persistance to learn the language. Because I miss so much of what people say, I am worried I will do poorly in college. I have note takers set up for my classes, but I am thinking about learning sign language so the college can just get me an interpreter and I can "hear" everything the prof says and not cliff notes version of it. My question is, which sign language should I learn? ASL or SEE. Thanks, Kara

Answer
Hi Kara,

I am glad you are considering college. Notetakers will certainly help but not enough.  In my professional opinion "SEE" is easier than "ASL" because ASL does not have english grammar in order but rather mixed.  "SEE" is exact english as spoken word in order.  I know both languages. It depends on your type and way you want it.  Sign Language Interpreters do know both languages.

I wish you best of luck in education.

Dr. Martin
