I was wondering if you could explain the physcolgy behind this, not so much why, but what drives them to do it? What are they trying to gain. What do they need to gain? To bring you up and shoot you down? What emotions are they feeling to want revenge?

As a man, I might indirectly say something to clown on a person over a hobby, car, boat, motorcycle. Rarely! I don't like to rain on peoples parades, or things they feel good about. It's hard for me to understand! I've never felt the need to mess with someone's emotions/feelings covertly or premeditated.

The actions of women may seem odd to you because like you've stated male and females are very different, especially when it comes to relationships.
Men act with logic and basically use their heads/brains over feelings and impulse in most situations.
Women however act on sole emotion. They feel massive flows of jealousy, rage, revenge, mischief, Depression, wryness, etc; throughout their day.
Some women also enjoy 'raining on your parade' because they envy other peoples happiness, usually this is triggered by a number of things, their estrogen for one, or a deeper unhappiness with themselves or even perhaps just being too spoiled growing up.
We as women like to be the center of attention and don't like sharing the spotlight with others.
Denying it is also only part of their game, when a women tells you she's 'not like that' shes lying to get on your good side.
Another thing that might interest you, is that women who are more busy with their schedule with (work, some sort of sport, family, etc), won't mingle with these games as much as the average girl and will actually have a solid grip or control of her hormones.
Unfortunately those women might also be the overly independent, emotionally scarred, or fed up women, lol.
