How to Deal with Jealousy/How to Make One Jealous - I'm Jealous...

Expert: Anisa - 10/20/2009

Question
I am so extremely jealous of my best friend in the whole wide world. We are both juniors in high school, and although we go to different schools, we still manage to be best friends. We talk all the time, and always fill each other in on all of the details of our lives.  So basically, I am crazy jealous of her. This feeling started relatively recently, about two months ago. For one thing, she's a choreographer for her school's dance team; I didn't get on my school's dance team, she has an amazing, cute, gorgeous boyfriend; I've never had a boyfriend, she is always getting all these awesome cool awards just for random stuff; I am not, she is super skinny and has a hot body; I have an average-ish looking body, she has a really cool, unique style; I dress to fit in, she is extremely popular at school and has really pretty, cool friends; I am a chess club nerd with a small group of nerdy friends .. . . .. . .
So I think you get the picture. The main thing that always starts me feeling these feelings of jealousy is the whole boyfriend thing. Anyways, I really need to get rid of these feelings because they are extremely unhealthy and they are taking over my whole life and it is just totally frustrating.  ...
CAN YOU HELP?

Answer
Hi,

Honestly, you have nothing to be jealous of. From what you described, your best friend is "typical"...meaning she is what the media portrays as 'perfect'. You, on the other hand, have all the qualities that 'real' people love: you're smart, friendly, and probably very good looking. You have a lot going for you, it doesn't matter if you have a boyfriend or not. Some of the most beautiful, popular celebrities didn't even have boyfriends until they were well into their 20's! Instead of spending so much time feeling jealous, turn those feelings around into something more positive and be proud of all the wonderful things you have going for you.

Good luck!
